Jaipur: A 27-year-old security guard was arrested for allegedly murdering his colleague in Jaipur in the early hours of Sunday and then using the victim’s thumb impression to unlock his phone and transfer Rs 29,000 from his bank account, police said.The accused, identified as Pradeep Kumar Yadav alias Kanhaiya, is a native of Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh and worked at a parking facility in Galta Gate. The victim, Pramod, 51, also from Mainpuri, was his co-worker. Police said the killing was driven by a grudge after Pramod refused to lend him Rs 2,000.Police officials said the incident took place in a guard room at Jain Nasiya parking in Basbadanpura on Monday. Around 4 am, the accused allegedly attacked Pramod while he was asleep, smashing his head with a stone and killing him on the spot.DCP (North) Karan Sharma said the accused was addicted to online cricket betting and had recently lost around Rs 5,000. To repay the losses, he asked the victim for a loan. Pramod refused despite having money in his account, something the accused knew because he often helped him with online banking transactions.After the murder, police said, the accused used the victim’s thumb to unlock his phone and transferred Rs 29,000 to his own account through an online payment app.He then allegedly tried to mislead investigators by staying close to the investigation, moving around with police personnel and tracking developments.The case was cracked after investigators found that money had been transferred from the victim’s account after his death. Police traced the beneficiary account to the accused.During questioning, Pradeep allegedly confessed to the crime. Police recovered the victim’s phone from his possession and said he had removed the SIM card and thrown it into a water tank.
