Madikeri: A woman who was a Valnur grama panchayat member was killed in a wild elephant attack early on Monday in Kodagu. This was the second death caused by the human-elephant conflict in a span of 10 days and the third fatal attack by an elephant in less than a month.The attack on Monday was reported at Balegundi colony in Valnuru limits. Jalajakshi, 50, a resident of Balegundi settlement in Valnuru, was the victim. As confirmed by sources, she was fetching firewood from outside the house during the morning hours when a lone tusker attacked her. The incident was reported at around 10am. The victim, the wife of Swami, was a member of the Valnur GP. The locals alerted the forest department, and the spot was visited by tahsildar Kiran Gowraiah and foresters, including ACF Gopal. The officials inspected the spot and handed over a cheque of Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family.On March 1, a 19-year-old was killed in a wild elephant attack in the district. The locals in the region demanded security from the movement of elephants.
