Nagpur: The Maharashtra govt has amended the Motor Vehicles Tax Act, significantly revising the Green Tax structure for older vehicles and effectively doubling the levy in several categories. The changes were notified in the official gazette following the Governor’s assent on April 6.Under the revised provisions, non-transport vehicles that have completed 15 years from the date of first registration will now be required to pay a higher lump-sum Green Tax for every subsequent block of five years. The updated rates vary based on vehicle type, fuel, and emission standards. For two-wheelers, vehicles compliant with BS-VI and higher emission norms will now attract a tax of Rs 2,000, while those under BS-IV and older standards will be charged Rs 4,000. Petrol-driven four-wheelers and other non-two-wheelers will be taxed Rs3,000 for BS-VI vehicles and Rs6,000 for older variants. Diesel vehicles will face the highest burden, with BS-VI models taxed at Rs3,500 and BS-IV and below vehicles at Rs7,000 for every five-year renewal period after completing 15 years.Officials indicated that the revised structure effectively doubles the existing Green Tax in many segments, particularly impacting older and more polluting vehicles. The move is aimed at discouraging the continued use of ageing vehicles and pushing owners towards cleaner alternatives. In a related amendment, the govt has also introduced a cap on taxes applicable to cranes. The revised provision states that the tax for cranes will be subject to a maximum limit of Rs 30 lakh. The amendments form part of the state’s broader push to align vehicle taxation with environmental goals while also rationalising revenue collection. Transport department officials stated that the revised rates will take effect immediately, affecting vehicle owners whose registrations cross the 15-year threshold. However, several vehicles are currently being used without paying the Green Tax.
