Chennai: Election flying squad officials seized gold and silver ornaments worth several crores in two different incidents in the city. Officers seized gold and silver ornaments from a car during a vehicle check in Narasimman street in Thousand Lights constituency on Thursday night. When the occupants failed to produce valid documents, the consignment was seized and handed over to income tax department officials in Nungambakkam. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the jewellery was brought from Mumbai by flight for a jewellery outlet in Chennai and was being transported from the airport. In another incident, a vehicle was intercepted near Lakshmapuram on Chennai-Tirupati national highway and gold jewellery and silver articles worth several crores were seized. The occupants said the valuables were being transported to shops in Tirupati but failed to produce supporting documents. The consignment was seized and handed over to the treasury. TNN
