Panaji: Over the next decade, the amount of waste generated in Goa is expected to rise by 220 tonnes per day (TPD) to 1,107.8 TPD in 2035, up from the 887.6 TPD in 2025. This prediction comes from the waste quantification and characterisation report prepared by state govt for framing the solid waste management policy for Goa.The expected increase, 220 TPD, is close to the capacity of Goa’s biggest waste management plant, in Saligao, pointing to the extent to which state govt has to up its garbage treatment capacity. The 887.6 TPD waste being generated in Goa at present is already far higher than the treatment facilities available. Apart from the Saligao integrated waste management plant (250 TPD capacity), the state has another 100 TPD plant in Cacora for South Goa, with locals already protesting waste from faraway areas being brought here for treatment. A common biomedical waste treatment facility at Kundaim and another common hazardous waste treatment plant at Pissurlem are the only other waste treatment centralized facilities available in Goa at present. The waste generated in Goa over the past five years has increased by 96 TPD from 791.8 TPD in 2020 to 887.6 TPD in 2025. But over the next five years, the waste produced is going to go up by 105 TPD to a total of 992.7 TPD, according to a reply tabled in the assembly by waste management minister Atanasio Monserrate. The minister said that some of the reasons for the growing waste management issues are an increase in population, booming tourism, commercial units, rise in residential units, renting premises without proper garbage management facilities, increase in use of plastic, and dumping of waste along the roadsides. The highest waste generation was in Bardez taluka, at 227.4 TPD, followed by Salcete with 173.5 TPD and Tiswadi with 125 TPD.Although individual panchayats are required to establish their own material recovery facilities and get residents to segregate waste at source, Monserrate, in his reply, said that the garbage from many panchayat areas comes as mixed waste, making it difficult to process. He also said that in many panchayats, door-to-door collection is not taking place smoothly.Calangute with 43.7 TPD, Candolim with 28.8 TPD, Taleigao with 15.1 TPD, and Anjuna at 14.4 TPD are the villages which generate the highest amount of waste.
