Panaji: Goa State Election Commission (SEC) is contemplating holding elections for all 11 municipal councils together in May, as the term of some municipal councils ends in April and some others in May.The elections for six urban local bodies — Bicholim, Pernem, Valpoi, Cuncolim, Curchorem-Cacora and Canacona — was held in March 2021, while those for Mapusa, Margao, Quepem, Sanguem and Mormugao were held in April 2021.
The election for 11 urban bodies is likely to be held on the new electoral roll published by the Election Commission of India after the special intensive revision (SIR) is completed and notified. The SEC is likely to hold the election for the lone corporation, CCP, next month. It will shortly finalise the reservation of wards, which will be notified thereafter. At least half of the state’s population participates in the urban local bodies’ elections, making them an opportunity for political parties to test their strength on the ground ahead of the 2027 assembly polls, a political observer said, while maintaining that it is not necessary that the outcome of the urban local bodies’ elections should reflect in the results of assembly elections. In the recently concluded zilla panchayat election which saw record 70% turnout, BJP was able to win both the North and South Goa ZPs with its alliance partners.
