Kulgam, March 23: Government Degree College (GDC) Kulgam on Monday observed Rashtriya Shaheed Diwas with solemnity, paying homage to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom.
The programme, organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and MY Bharat, was conducted by the NSS Unit of the college under the coordination of NSS Programme Officer Adil Bashir Dar.
The event began with the National Anthem, followed by floral tributes to freedom fighters Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Hari Rajguru, and Sukhdev Thapar.
Principal Prof. Mohd Abas Shah, in his address, highlighted the significance of the day and stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices of martyrs in shaping the nation. He urged students to uphold values of patriotism, dedication, and social responsibility.
A lecture on the historical importance of Shaheed Diwas was delivered by Iqbal Shafi, who called upon the youth to remain committed to the ideals of justice, equality, and national integrity.
As part of the observance, an NSS-led padyatra was conducted from the college to Kandi Pora to spread awareness about patriotism and civic responsibility. A campus cleanliness drive was also organised, promoting collective responsibility towards maintaining a clean environment.
The programme saw active participation from students, NSS volunteers, and faculty members, serving as a meaningful tribute to the martyrs.
