Big pile-ups could be spotted across the city as Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) and its garbage collection agencies failed to provide an alternative so far.Officials said about 50% of workers took leave for elections.The worst-affected localities are in zones 3, 7 and 8, including Aliganj, Indira Nagar, Jankipuram and Faizullaganj. In zone 8, complaints also emerged from Aashiana, Vrindavan Yojana, Telibagh, South City and areas along Rae Bareli Road. Similar situations were reported from commercial hubs such as Bhootnath Market and Kapoorthala.Anil Verma, a resident of Indira Nagar, said, “Garbage remained outside houses for over a week, and the foul smell has become difficult to tolerate despite residents paying user charges.”Sunita Shukla from Chinhat said, “Earlier, garbage vehicles came daily, but now there is no fixed schedule.” She added that many households are forced to dump waste in vacant plots.Rajesh Singh, a resident of Eldeco Colony in zone 8, said, “No garbage has been collected in the past five days despite repeated complaints to supervisors.”LMC officials said Lucknow Swachhata Abhiyan (LSA), which manages sanitation work in 77 wards out of 110, was left with around 400 workers against a requirement of about 700.Officials from LSA said that the company is hiring local workers and the situation will be on track in the next two to three days.Meanwhile, several resident welfare associations have demanded a waiver of user charges until regular services resume.Daily field inspection till crisisThe LMC has decided to make daily field inspections of sanitation and civic services and take strict action against agencies failing to meet waste collection targets. The decisions were taken at a review meeting chaired by Mayor Sushma Kharkwal on Wednesday.
