Nagpur: Marking a historic shift in the junior college admission process, Maharashtra on Monday kickstarted the First Year Junior College (FYJC) admissions for Class 11 students under the state board, with a unified timetable and a common online portal for the first time. On the first day, Dr Ambedkar College saw a cut-off of 93.2% for science, while commerce closed at 90.6%. The new common admission portal — introduced to streamline the process, ensure transparency, and prevent overlapping of admissions — saw significant traffic on the opening day. Students from across the state used the centralised system to lock in their preferred colleges and courses. Official statistics on how many students actually took admissions in colleges are still awaited. An education official said, “This is the first time the state has implemented a uniform schedule and digital system for FYJC admissions. It removes confusion, ensures uniformity, and helps students and parents plan better.”In Nagpur city alone, hundreds of students logged in early in the morning to check seat availability and confirm their allotments. While popular colleges witnessed brisk allotments in the science and commerce streams, seats in arts were still available by the end of the day.Kabir Rawlekar, vice-principal of Dr Ambedkar College, said, “The college vivaciously kept the legacy alive in enrolling the meritorious students with high percentages. Our science admissions closed at 466 marks, while for commerce, we closed at 453 marks.”With the first merit list now in play, students have been given a deadline to confirm their admission in the allotted college. Until July 7, students have to complete the admission formalities, after which round 2 will begin. Further rounds of admissions are scheduled in the coming weeks. The state education department has urged students to keep track of updates on the official portal and ensure timely verification of documents to avoid last-minute complications.BOXMISSION ADMISSION* Maharashtra introduces unified timetable and common online portal for FYJC admissions * Dr Ambedkar College sees high cut-offs: 93.2% for science and 90.6% for commerce* Students must confirm admission by July 7 after first merit list announcement online* Further admission rounds scheduled in coming weeks with updated merit lists released* Digital system aims to remove confusion and ensure uniformity in FYJC admissions
