Mangaluru: Fr Melwin Joseph Pinto, pro-chancellor of St Aloysius University, rector of St Aloysius Institutions, and vice-president of the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society, died Friday at 4pm at Fr Muller’s Hospital here. He was 63.Born on Dec 31, 1963, in the Bendore–Kadri area, Fr Melwin studied at St Aloysius, Mangaluru. He joined the Society of Jesus in June 1981 and was ordained a Jesuit priest on April 14, 1997. His qualifications included an MA in English, MEd, and diplomas in psychology and counselling, and school administration.He served as headmaster of St Joseph’s Primary and High Schools in Hassan; founder-principal of St Joseph’s Indian Composite PU College, Bengaluru; headmaster of St Aloysius High School, Mangaluru; and principal of St Joseph’s PU College, Hassan. He also worked as section head, English desk for Asia and Indian Languages, at Vatican Communications and Radio, Rome.He later served as superior and director of Fatima Retreat House, Valencia, Mangaluru, and as superior of the South Indian Common Jesuit Juniorate, Trivandrum. Before his recent posting, he was the superior of Vidyaniketan, Jesuit Study Home, Dharwad.His mortal remains will be kept for public viewing at St Aloysius College Chapel from 10am to 2pm, and at Divine Mercy Church, Fatima Retreat House, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on April 13. The funeral Mass will be held at 3.30pm, followed by burial at the Jesuit Cemetery, Mangaluru.
