New Delhi: A five-year-old child died after being crushed in an alleged hit-and-run incident involving a truck in northwest Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area on Sunday, police said. The child was crossing the road when the truck ran over him, after which the driver fled the scene.The incident came to light when police received information about an accident near T-3, Max Hospital, in front of Lohia Camp in Haiderpur. A police team found a truck stationed at the scene, with a young child lying critically injured beneath the vehicle.The child was identified as Tirath, a resident of Lohia Camp. He had suffered grievous injuries in the accident. Police immediately shifted him to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital in Jahangirpuri, where doctors declared him dead. According to police, an eyewitness told investigators that the accident occurred due to overspeeding and rash driving by the truck driver. “The child was crossing the road, when the truck driver crushed him underneath,” a senior police officer said. Based on his statement and preliminary evidence collected from the scene, police began efforts to identify and trace the driver involved.During the investigation, the driver of the vehicle was identified as 32-year-old Ajay Kumar Das, a resident of a jhuggi cluster in Shalimar Bagh. Police said the truck has been taken into custody as part of the probe.A case has been registered.
