Mapusa: A major fire erupted at a scrapyard owned by Rajendra Pandey near Carvalho fuel pump at Mapusa early Tuesday morning. It was suspected to have been triggered by a short circuit. Despite the intensity of the blaze and the dense smoke that blanketed the area near Gandhi Circle, no injuries or casualties were reported.A worker who was sleeping on the premises managed to escape unhurt after being jolted awake by the flames. Upon receiving an alert, the Mapusa fire brigade, led by fire officer Ganesh Govekar and deputy officers Omkar Karbotkar and Sandeep Naik, rushed to the scene. Their swift intervention prevented the fire from spreading to the nearby fuel pump and saved nearly 50% of the scrap inventory. The authorities are currently assessing the total financial loss incurred by the owner.Mapusa police have since conducted an inquiry to verify the cause of the fire.In another incident, a fire broke out in dry grass at Nachinola on Tuesday afternoon, and quickly spread to a house and A nearby ice factory shed, causing a brief scare in the locality. A team from the Mapusa fire station battled the blaze for several hours, successfully preventing the flames from engulfing the main factory structure or neighbouring homes.While the fire caused some damage to the house and the shed, fire officers confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported. The cause of the initial grass fire is being investigated.
