Ghaziabad: A case of alleged medical negligence was registered against the management of Sarvodaya Hospital in Kavi Nagar, and a nurse, after part of a nine-month-old girl’s little finger was accidentally amputated during a routine medical procedure. Chief medical officer Akhilesh Mohan said a 4mm portion of the fingertip, including the nail, was severed while removing a cannula from the infant’s left hand. A minor procedure was performed at the hospital on Monday to remove the severed muscle, and she continued to remain under treatment, the official said.A complaint filed by the child’s father, Ankush Tyagi, on Saturday said the injury occurred on Feb 27, three days after the infant, Shree, was admitted to the private hospital for a high fever. Ankush alleged that even as the family was completing discharge formalities, a nurse used scissors to cut an adhesive surgical tape holding a cannula in place on Shree’s left hand. During the process, the scissors reportedly slipped from the nurse’s hand and severed the tip of the infant’s little finger. The family claimed that the nail-covered portion of the fingertip was cut off.A cannula is a thin tube commonly inserted into a vein to administer fluids or medication. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against the hospital’s management and the nurse on Feb 28 under BNS Section 125, which deals with acts endangering life or personal safety. A senior police officer said the case is under investigation, but no arrests have been made so far. The officer added that a chargesheet would be filed after the probe is completed, and the findings may also be forwarded to the relevant medical authorities for further action, if required.Mohan, meanwhile, added that the health department has sought a detailed report from the hospital management and would take appropriate action based on its findings.A statement issued by the hospital stated that the child suffered a severed fingertip and was undergoing treatment. They added that the family was counselled and follow-up care is being provided.
