Kanpur: Fed up with regular humiliation, a schoolgirl in Unnao publicly slapped a youth who had been harassing her on the street for days. The video of the teenage girl slapping and hitting the accused with slippers went viral, drawing widespread praise for her courage on social media platforms. The video shows the girl grabbing the accused by his collar, verbally confronting him, and even using a brick to threaten him in full public view.Though the girl refused to lodge a formal complaint, police took the accused in police custody and booked him for breach of peace. The accused, 20-year-old Akash, is an e-rickshaw driver supplying bottled drinking water. The incident took place on Saturday afternoon but the video went viral on Tuesday. The confrontation took place on Pony Road in Gangaghat Kotwali police area when the accused again made indecent remarks at the girl, blocked her path and insisted she accompany him. The girl then retaliated. A crowd gathered at the spot as the girl taught a lesson to her harasser. Someone recorded and shared the incident online, though no bystanders intervened. Gangaghat SHO Pramod Kumar Mishra told TOI that Akash, a resident of Unnao, was arrested and released on bail from the police station on Saturday night. “No formal complaint has been filed by the student, but the accused has been booked for breach of peace,” the SHO added.A social media user posted: “Such girls are an inspiration to society as they respond boldly rather than fearfully.” Local residents said some hooligans often pass comments on women in the locality and called for more police vigil.
