Kolkata: The family of Arup Banerjee, the Trinamool BLA who died in the RG Kar lift tragedy on Friday, has pleaded with the govt that his widow Sonali be given a permanent job so that she can secure her son Ayush’s future. “Arup’s wife has a Masters in physics. She also has a BEd degree. We would urge the state govt to give her a permanent job so that she can secure her son’s future,” said Arup’s aunt Krishna Banerjee. The Banerjee family got the mother and son discharged from RG Kar on Saturday morning and took them to a private hospital for a thorough check-up. Doctors from the department of orthopaedics, paediatrics and emergency critical care examined the duo and conducted various tests. Hospital sources said the two sustained minor injuries but both were deeply traumatised. They were sent back home after doctors found it was not necessary to hospitalise them. Sonali’s father Nilachal Dutta said: “My daughter is in severe trauma. I do not know how she will come out of this shock and raise the child.”A day after the tragedy, Arup’s mother Gayetri Banerjee remained inconsolable. “I asked my son not to visit RG Kar Hospital but he went there because of the emergency on Thursday night,” the septuagenarian lamented. “When his body was brought home on Friday evening, I could not recognise him. He had a painful death,” she muttered, breaking down in tears. “The killer lift and the negligence of the people at RG Kar hospital killed my son. In spite of our family members pleading for help, none took any action on time. Had they shown efforts at the right time, my Baban could have been saved,” said Gayetri, adding, “My daughter-in-law’s face is bruised. She has injuries on her legs, hands and waist. My grandson also has a black spot near his eye.” “I have nothing to say. I have lost my son. I have shifted my grandson and daughter-in-law to a private hospital for thorough treatment,” said Arup’s father Amal Banerjee. Arup’s cousin sister Sutapa said she lost her “childhood friend, brother and secret-keeper” as Arup and she were born three months apart. “Buchu was very worried about the child as he will have to undergo an operation. It was past 3.30 am, and the child needed to use the toilet. I asked the security guard to let the child use the toilet on that floor but he told us to go downstairs. My brother, nephew and sister-in-law went inside the lift and after some time, I heard the child crying. I asked the security guard if the lift was faulty but he insisted that everything was fine. After a long time, I confronted the guard again, who was sitting there with headphones on. After a while, I heard my sister-in-law shouting for help. We pleaded before the RG Kar people and CISF to help us, break the door, arrange for the keys to save them but they did not take prompt action.”
