Salem: A farmer died after his tractor fell into an agricultural well in Salem city on Sunday. Firefighters and police later fished out his body.Police identified the deceased as Venkatesh, 46, of Kuranguchavadi in the city. He owned a business named Thangam Grill Works in the city. He also had an agricultural field in the city. “Venkatesh was using the tractor to collect gravel, to build a barrier near the well on our field. He suddenly lost control of the tractor, and it plunged into the well. My son was unable to get out and drowned before my eyes,” said K Munusamy, the deceased’s father.Bystanders who witnessed the incident alerted Suramangalam police and the fire and rescue services personnel from the Shevape station. Police reached the spot with the fire brigade and began rescue operations, but it was in vain. Meanwhile, diesel and oil from the tractor spilled into the well, hampering the rescue efforts. Firefighters and police struggled for nearly three hours to recover the body.The body was sent to the Salem Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered.
