Panchkula: The Anti-Immigration Fraud Unit of Panchkula Police has arrested two real brothers for allegedly duping a man of Rs 35 lakh by impersonating a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and falsely promising to secure a govt CCTV tender. The accused, identified as Vipul Goyal and Tarun Goyal, were taken into custody following an investigation, during which police recovered part of the defrauded amount along with a fake Haryana Police DSP uniform.According to ACP Vikram Nehra, the case surfaced after a complaint by Yogesh, a resident of Panipat. As per the complaint, in 2014, Tarun introduced his brother Vipul to Yogesh, falsely claiming that Vipul was a DSP in the Haryana Police. To build credibility, Vipul allegedly met the victim on several occasions dressed in a police uniform. The brothers later lured Yogesh by promising to help him secure a govt tender for installing CCTV cameras. Trusting them, the victim allegedly handed over Rs 15 lakh in cash in Feb 2017 in Sector 6, Panchkula. Over the years, the duo is said to have extracted a total of Rs 35 lakh through a mix of cash payments and bank transfers. When the promised tender failed to materialise between 2017 and 2022, the victim sought a refund. The accused allegedly kept delaying repayment and, under pressure in June 2023, returned only Rs 1.96 lakh before severing all contact. Subsequent verification revealed that Vipul Goyal was never associated with the police force.DCP Panchkula Srishti Gupta said a case was registered on Sept 11, 2025, at Sector-7 police station under relevant IPC sections, including cheating, criminal breach of trust, impersonation and fraud. The investigation led to the arrest of both accused on March 28, 2026. They were produced in court the following day, and a three-day police remand was granted. After completion of the remand on April 1, the accused were sent to judicial custody. Police are probing the possible involvement of other accomplices.
