Kolkata: Fraudsters posing as bank officials allegedly siphoned off Rs 16.5 lakh from the account of a 63-year-old woman on Thursday, police said. The victim lodged a complaint at Karaya Police Station. According to the complainant, Rs 16.5 lakh which was her life savings, was withdrawn from her account. On March 25, a woman posing as an employee of a private bank visited her home and claimed to solve issues related to the bank’s mobile application. The woman assured her that a bank representative would contact her shortly. Soon after, she received a call from an unknown number, where the caller introduced himself as a bank official and instructed her to download a mobile application. Unaware of the fraud, the victim complied. On March 26, while she was resting due to ill health, the fraudsters allegedly transferred large sums of money from her account in multiple transactions. She discovered the fraud around 5.15 pm after checking SMS alerts.She immediately contacted her bank manager and froze her accounts. She also reported the incident on the National Cyber Crime Portal.
