Surat: A 42-year-old man from Umra, Deep Nayak, on Wednesday filed a complaint alleging extortion against former Surat Congress vice-president Rushin Rayka. Nayak had served as working president of the Surat Congress in the past. Nayak alleged that Rayka lent him money without a financier’s licence and has been demanding interest. Umra police booked Rayka under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Gujarat Money-Lenders Act. According to the FIR, Nayak served as Surat Congress working president in 2023. During this period, Rayka was vice-president of the Surat Congress and the two shared a good friendship. In 2018, Nayak’s land in Dindoli was reserved by SUDA. Nayak was in need of money and wanted to sell the plot. Rayka allegedly told him that he had good relations with officers in the govt and he would help releasing it from reservation. As Nayak needed money, Rayka offered him a loan at 6% monthly interest. Nayak borrowed Rs 1.05 crore in 2018-2019 in tranches and repaid him Rs 1.27 crore. Rayka has allegedly been demanding Rs 1.95 crore more in interest. As Nayak had given him cheques as security, Rayka deposited them and got them returned to file a complaint in court. After pressuring Nayak, Rayka took Rs 40 lakh from him to get the reservation removed from his land. In Jan 2023, Rayka allegedly bought Nayak’s flat for just Rs 8 lakh against its jantri rate of Rs 35 lakh and market value of Rs 90 lakh. As Rayka allegedly kept harassing and threatening Nayak by making applications in police stations, he approached Umra police with a complaint for extortion and criminal intimidation.
