The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu.
The polling process will take place in a single phase, with voting on April 23, 2026. The counting of votes is slated to be held on May 4, 2026. Check live updates on Assembly Elections 2026.
The election schedule was revealed during a press briefing held in the national capital, where officials outlined the key dates along with the phased polling plan.
With the announcement, the electoral process in the state formally begins.
In this election, incumbent chief minster MK Stalin-led Secular Progressive Alliance is seeking a second consecutive term pitted against the BJP-AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance.

According to the commission, the election process will follow the standard sequence of notifications, nominations and scrutiny before voters head to the polling stations.
Issue of notification: March 30, 2026
Last date for filing nominations: April 6, 2026
Scrutiny of nominations: April 7, 2026
Last date for withdrawal of candidature: April 9, 2026
Counting And Results
The counting of votes will be conducted on May 4, following which the final result of the Tamil Nadu will be announced.
Tamil Nadu 2021 Elections
The DMK registered a comfortable win, securing a total of 133 seats in the 234-member legislative assembly in 2021. The Congress, a key ally of the DMK, won 18 seats.
The AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance won 75 seats, with the BJP securing four seats.
