Back in February 2024, news broke that ‘Drishyam’ would soon see remakes in several international languages. The announcement came from Kumar Mangat Pathak and Abhishek Pathak, who had acquired global remake rights for ‘Drishyam 1’ and 2 from the original banner, Aashirvad Cinemas. At the time, projects in the USA and Korea were already underway, and talks for the Spanish version were in their final stages. Now, almost two years later, the much-awaited Spanish remake is ready to go on floors in the next few months.
‘Drishyam’ Spanish remake to begin filming in June
A Bombay Times report revealed that Rodrigo Espinel, who is producing the Spanish remake of ‘Drishyam,’ announced at the ongoing International Film Festival of Delhi that the film’s shoot will begin in June. Sharing insights about the project, he said, “It’s an interesting story because my partner is a Mexican producer who bought the IP rights, and he called us because Spain has wonderful tax incentives. The concept can be adapted perfectly to Spanish culture. So, we have now started working on it, and we are going to start shooting next June. It has a Spanish director and a top Spanish cast.”
Drishyam’s universal story connects globally
When asked why he believes the Drishyam remake will resonate with Spanish audiences, Rodrigo Espinel said, “In the end, it is the story of a father who tries to protect his daughter and a mother who tries to find where her son is, so it becomes easy to adapt. I think as a producer, if you try to adapt a very local movie, it’s difficult. Even if we adapt the story, the soul of the film is lost. In this case, even though it is a very Indian movie, it’s easy to adapt and connect with our audience.”
The Hindi remake ‘Drishyam’ brought the story to Bollywood
Released in 2015, ‘Drishyam’ was the official Hindi remake of the 2013 Malayalam film starring Mohanlal. Featuring Ajay Devgn, Tabu, Shriya Saran, Ishita Dutta, and others, the film was directed by Nishikant Kamat. It portrayed the gripping story of an uneducated father who goes to extraordinary lengths to protect his wife and daughter after they accidentally kill a sexual predator. The victim, being the son of a powerful and ruthless police officer, makes the situation even more intense and complex.
The ‘Drishyam’ franchise continues with a third part
Following the success of ‘Drishyam,’ its sequel ‘Drishyam 2’ (2022) emerged as an unexpected blockbuster. The film saw the return of the original cast, along with the addition of Akshaye Khanna in a key role. Abhishek Pathak directed the sequel and has also taken charge of ‘Drishyam 3,’ which is scheduled to release on October 2 this year. In the upcoming installment, Akshaye Khanna will not be part of the cast, while Jaideep Ahlawat and Prakash Raj have joined the franchise.
‘Drishyam’ Malayalam series moves forward
Meanwhile, the second installment of the original Malayalam version, ‘Drishyam 2,’ hit theaters in 2021. The third chapter of the franchise is slated to release in cinemas on May 21 this year.
