Ghaziabad: Residents of Sahibabad, Indirapuram and Vaishali questioned civic functioning after drain-cleaning operations left silt lying on roadsides for days in several areas. They referred to spots near the passport office, Sahibabad industrial area and roads in Vaishali Sector 2-A, where the waste has remained unattended. In the Sahibabad industrial area, drain cleaning has left waste and debris dumped on the green belts. Residents say the waste has been lying there for a long time. “Apart from roadsides, now green belts are also being used to dump silt from drains. This is highly detrimental for the little green spaces left in the city,” said Akash Sharma, a resident of Loni.“The waste extracted during the drain cleaning should have been collected and disposed of responsibly, but instead, it remains scattered,” said another resident. The problem gets worse because 10 to 15% of the debris falls back into the drains. This happens due to rain, stray cattle, or vehicle movement. Residents have urged the GMC to act immediately and fix the cleaning process. In Vaishali Sector 2-A, drains were cleaned about a week ago, but the debris has remained on the footpath even after recent rainfall. Residents have expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the cleaning efforts, as much of the waste was likely washed back into the very drains that were meant to be cleared.“While some cleaning initiatives have taken place, others have reportedly been abandoned. At multiple locations, drain slabs have not been removed, and existing culverts remain neglected, further complicating the issue. We need sustainable solutions that address both waste removal and environmental preservation,” said Puskar Singh, a resident of Vaishali.According to GMC officials, silt from drains is left on roadsides for a few days to dry before being picked up. The process is underway, and issues raised will be addressed, they said.
