Ludhiana: A 37-year-old woman has been left stranded in Punjab after her Canadian-based husband and in-laws reportedly fled the country following a domestic dispute, prompting local police to file criminal charges against the Brampton family.Rupinder Kaur, of Jandyali, filed a formal complaint with the Jamalpur police alleging years of systematic harassment and dowry demands by her husband, Narinder Singh, and his immediate family. The accused, originally from the Fatehgarh Sahib district, now reside in Brampton, Ontario.The investigating officer, assitant sub-inspector (ASI) Gurcharan Singh, has said that Rupinder Kaur married Narinder in Feb 2017 and moved to Canada subsequently. Once abroad, she claims her husband’s family began mistreating her over dowry and excluded her frequently from family trips to India, despite her repeated pleas to accompany them.The situation escalated during a recent group visit to India. Rupinder Kaur alleged that after a heated argument, her husband, along with her father-in-law, Rulda Singh, and mother-in-law, Jaswinder Kaur, boarded a flight back to Canada without her knowledge. The family also faces allegations of criminal intimidation and conspiracy. The woman’s relative, Kulwinder Kaur, also of Brampton, has been named in the police report alongside members of the immediate family.Ludhiana authorities have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), citing charges of cruelty by a husband or relative, criminal breach of trust, criminal intimidation, and criminal conspiracy. Police investigate the legal avenues for pursuing the accused across international borders.
