Bengaluru: Hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations across the city have started altering their menus and turn to alternative cooking methods. At RV College of Engineering, which houses 1,200 hostel students, authorities have removed several gas-intensive items from the menu. “We informed students and parents about the change. Items that consume more energy, including chappathi, dosa and puri, have been taken off the menu. We currently have sufficient gas after a delivery two days ago, but we are preparing for the coming days when the stock may run out. We are sourcing firewood as a backup,” said principal KN Subramanya.BMS College of Engineering, where about 2,200 students stay in hostels, has begun using firewood as an alternative fuel. “We sourced firewood that should last 15 days. We also received 14 cylinders Thursday. While gas will be used judiciously for items like chappathi and dosa, we will largely depend on firewood,” said principal Bheemsha Arya. The Paying Guest Accommodation Welfare Association has also advised PG residents that only basic meals such as rice, dal or sambar, pickle and buttermilk will be served until the gas supply normalises. Fried and gas-intensive items have been temporarily suspended.
