CHENNAI: The DMK regime is a bourgeois govt, and CPM will seek more than six seats as an ally in the coming assembly election, but it will not be part of a coalition govt, said CPM state secretary P Shanmugam. In an interview with TOI, the 64-year-old leader who took charge in January this year said, “CPM’s assessment of DMK is that it is a regional bourgeois party which works to safeguard the interests of capitalists in the region.” Just because CPM is an ally of DMK, it does not mean it has to accept everything the govt says and does, he said. There is growing discontent among the youth over unemployment, Shanmugam said, and this could work in favour of TVK president Vijay. He criticised the Stalin govt for failing to deliver on its promise of filling vacancies in government schools and universities. He said a left democratic alternative is an eventuality in the not-so-distant future. On the recent custodial death of Ajith Kumar and the controversy surrounding it, Shanmugam said, “This would cause a blot on the DMK govt.”
