Dibrugarh: In a move to reclaim public spaces and ensure pedestrian safety, the Dibrugarh Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Tuesday launched a massive enforcement drive against illegal encroachment in several key commercial areas of the city. The operation targeted vendors and shop owners who have been obstructing footpaths with their wares and those storing construction materials on public roads. The special drive was conducted simultaneously on Hanuman Singhania Road, Cole Road, Graham Bazar, and in the vicinity of the New Market. During the inspection, DMC teams booked multiple offenders, imposing a spot fine of Rs 2,000 on each violator.Speaking to reporters, DMC commissioner Jay Vikas said the administration is adopting a zero-tolerance policy towards encroachments. He added that the objective is to restore order and ensure that the city’s infrastructure is used for its intended purpose.“Strict fines have been imposed to keep the city safe, clean, and obstruction-free. Footpaths are meant for pedestrians, not for displaying goods or parking vehicles. Similarly, public roads cannot be used as personal storage yards for construction materials. Such actions not only create traffic jams but also pose a serious safety hazard to the public,” Vikas said. The commissioner revealed that the civic body had issued multiple warnings in the past, urging traders and residents to clear the encroachments voluntarily. However, due to non-compliance, the DMC was forced to initiate punitive action.“We had earlier issued strict warnings to refrain from such activities. Unfortunately, many chose to ignore these advisories. Today’s drive is a message that the DMC means business. This is not a one-day affair, the drive will continue in other parts of the city as well,” he added.Residents and commuters welcomed the move, expressing relief over the clearing of choked pathways. The crackdown gains significance in light of Assam govt’s vision to develop Dibrugarh as the state’s second capital. With rapid urbanisation and increased investment flowing into the city, the DMC has been ramping up efforts to improve civic amenities and urban management.“The govt has big plans for Dibrugarh, and for that, the city needs to be model in terms of cleanliness and order. We are committed to making Dibrugarh a world-class city,” the commissioner said.
