Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party leader Datta Meghe passed away on Sunday evening at the age of 89, his close aide and former Nagpur deputy mayor Raghunath Malikar said.
Meghe is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters and grandchildren. He was the father of Hingna MLA Sandeep Meghe and former MLC Sagar Meghe.
Four-time Lok Sabha MP with long political career
Meghe had a long political career and was elected as a Lok Sabha MP four times from Nagpur, Ramtek and Wardha constituencies. He also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2002 to 2008.
Shift from Congress to NCP and later BJP
He began his political journey with the Congress and later joined the Nationalist Congress Party led by Sharad Pawar when it was formed in 1999. During his tenure, he also served as a state minister.
Meghe joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014 and remained associated with the party in his later years.
