Aizawl: Mamit district election officer K Laltlawmlova unveiled the draft electoral roll for the Dampa assembly constituency on Tuesday, revealing a total of 20,405 registered voters. This includes 10,425 male and 9,980 female voters across 41 polling stations. The release is part of the ongoing special summary revision of the photo electoral roll, 2025.The revised roll will be pivotal in the upcoming by-election, necessitated by the passing of sitting legislator Lalrintluanga Sailo of the Mizo National Front (MNF). The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set the period for filing claims and objections from Tuesday until Sept 17, with resolutions to be addressed by Sept 25. The final electoral roll is scheduled for publication on Sept 30.The draft roll indicates a sex ratio of 957, with male voters outnumbering females, a rarity in Mizoram. Zopui polling station records the fewest voters at 38, while Silsury leads with 1,089.Strategically located near Bangladesh and Tripura, Dampa has historically favoured Congress candidates, but BJP is eyeing the seat for potential gains. Ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has nominated local singer Vanlalsailova, who previously lost the seat in the 2023 assembly election.MNF is set to announce its candidate on Wednesday, with Dr R Lalthangliana, a former minister and senior vice president, as a leading contender. Meanwhile, Congress is yet to finalize its nominee, and BJP may reveal its candidate during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Aizawl on Sept 13, coinciding with the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line.
