Chennai: At least seven people, including the owner of a jewellery shop, sustained severe burn injuries after a cylinder exploded while melting jewellery at a goldsmith unit on Singannan Street, Sowcarpet, on Wednesday night. The shop was located on the fourth floor of a building. Neighbours heard the blast and raised an alarm. The fire department was alerted immediately. Fire tenders from high court fire station rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire. Seven people sustained severe burns in the incident. The injured were identified as Suman Paul, the owner of the shop from Vyasarpadi, and six employees.The victims were shifted to Kilpauk govt Medical College Hospital. Suman sustained 40% burn injuries, while an employee Aravind sustained 30% burn injuries, and the other five sustained 20% burn injuries each.Police are investigating whether safety protocols were followed at the shop.
