Surat: The Varachha police arrested a CRPF jawan, identified as Shimanchal Nahak (37), on Sunday for allegedly possessing 22kg of ganja. The accused, a native of Odisha, was intercepted near Khand Bazar in Varachha while carrying a trolley bag containing the contraband.Police received a tip-off that a man would be passing through the area with narcotics. Acting on the input, a team apprehended Nahak, who had reportedly brought the ganja from Ganjam district in Odisha via train and got down at Udhna railway station.Nahak had joined the CRPF in 2015 and was most recently posted at Rohini jail in Delhi. He was relieved of duty on June 21 following his transfer to Assam. He had also previously served in Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, he resides in Odisha with his wife and two children.According to investigators, Nahak had a few days before reporting to his new posting and used this time to engage in illegal drug transport. Police are now probing whether this was his first attempt or if he has been involved in similar activities earlier.Sources suggest that a significant financial debt may have driven Nahak to take up this risky venture.
