Mohali: The Punjab govt has issued a notification for the dissolution of Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC), with effect from April 11, 2026. Following the dissolution, the civic body will be administered by the MC commissioner, with support from the chief engineer, until fresh elections are conducted. The date of the elections is yet to be announced.According to the notification issued by Manjit Singh Brar on April 2, the tenure of the current MC House will come to an end, bringing the terms of the mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor to a close.MC commissioner Sundeep Singh Garha will assume charge of day-to-day administrative affairs from April 11. Officials confirmed that governance of the civic body will remain under administrative control until a new House is elected.While there was some ambiguity regarding the exact tenure, the Punjab local bodies minister clarified that the MC House would formally complete five years on April 26. However, the administrative transition will begin earlier, from April 11.The state govt has already notified municipal elections for 2026, though the exact polling schedule is yet to be announced. Sources in the department indicated that elections are likely to be held in June.With the dissolution of the House, political activity is expected to intensify as parties prepare to field candidates for councillor seats and key positions in the new civic body.Congress councillor and deputy mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi said the oath of office was taken in April and the current term is concluding in the same period, adding that the political process will restart once parties finalise their candidates.As per official data, elections in Mohali will be conducted across 50 wards. The city has an estimated population of over five lakh, with approximately 2.36 lakh registered voters. Reservation of seats has been finalised, including five seats for scheduled castes, two for scheduled caste women, three for backward classes and two for backward-class women. Out of 38 general category seats, 20 are reserved for women and 18 for men.Apart from Mohali, municipal corporations in Abohar, Bathinda, Pathankot, Moga, Hoshiarpur, Batala, Barnala and Kapurthala are also scheduled to go to polls as part of the same notification.Officials reiterated that while the election date is awaited, preparations for conducting polls across all notified civic bodies are underway.
