“We are holding talks. We will again begin the talks in about a week,” Selvaperunthagai told media persons in Tiruvallur.
His comments came after DMK MP Kanimozhi met the leader of the opposition Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Wednesday to resolve the seat-sharing deadlock between the ruling DMK and the Congress ahead of the upcoming state election.
The Congress believes it will get the expected number of seats, according to him. “We are not exerting pressure on our ally. We will ask and get what we want and the DMK will give (us),” Selvaperunthagai said.
Congress won 18 of the 25 seats it contested in the 2021 state election.
Selvaperunthagai went on to take a jibe at these AIADMK chief and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s meeting with Union home minister Amit Shah, saying Palaniswami met the BJP top brass “masked”. “Unlike that meeting, Kanimozhi’s meeting with our leader was straightforward and dignified,” he said.
The meeting between Kanimozhi and Rahul Gandhi was “extremely positive”, a person familiar with the matter had told ET, and the parties had ironed out several differences and agreed on a way forward. The next step will be the formation of a committee by the DMK, according to the person. “The committee will figure out the exact number of seats that the DMK and its alliance partners will be contesting. Further shape will take place after that,” the person said. The meeting between the two party leaders came against the backdrop of the DMK’s Madurai North MLA G Thalapathi making sharp comments against the Congress in Madurai on Monday.
