Coimbatore: A 50-year-old professor who works at a private college in the city lost 96 lakh to an online trading scam that promised high returns on investment.Police said the victim from Periyar Nagar in Ramanathapuram stated in his complaint that he came across an online advertisement in November, promising high returns for investment. After he contacted the number mentioned in the ad, he was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘Shoonya V917 Rising Bulls’, in which people shared positive investment feedback. Believing it to be genuine, the professor subsequently invested 96 lakh through nine different transactions to several bank accounts mentioned by them, between November- December 2025. However, he did not receive any returns nor was he able to get back the amount he had invested.Realising that he had been cheated, he lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore city cybercrime police, who registered a case and began investigation.
