Coimbatore: A 50-year-old man was sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment on Monday, for attempting to murder his younger brother over a monetary dispute at Rathinapuri in the city in 2017.C Muthukumar, 50, of Mesthirimarappan Street at Rathinapuri in Coimbatore city, and his younger brother C Ganeshan, 45, were running a restaurant on 100 Feet Road along with their father. Around 15 years ago, their father handed over that rental restaurant to Ganeshan and gave Muthukumar another rental restaurant at Sivananda Colony.The building owner of the restaurant operated by Ganeshan asked him and other shops in the building to vacate after he sold the building. The buyer reportedly handed over 70 lakh to Ganeshan to distribute it among all shopkeepers to vacate. Ganeshan, however, distributed only 20 lakh to other shopkeepers and kept 50 lakh for himself.When Muthukumar got to know about the money in Ganeshan’s possession, he asked for a share from the 50 lakh, but Ganeshan refused. On November 9, 2017, around 9.45pm, Muthukumar attempted to murder Ganeshan with a sickle. Ganeshan suffered cut injuries on his head, left wrist, and right forearm. He was treated at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. Rathinapuri police registered a case and arrested Muthukumar. The case trial was held before the third ASJ court. Additional public prosecutor, P Krishnamoorthy, appeared on behalf of the prosecution. The judge, PK Dhamayanthi, pronounced the verdict and imposed a fine of 5,000.
