Coimbatore: The city corporation has commenced preliminary work on junction improvement by initiating traffic study across key points in its limits for the creation of traffic islands. Earlier, the corporation had allocated Rs5 crore for the formation of traffic islands.Pointing out that the civic body had identified 58 locations for junction improvement, corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said they had narrowed down to 20 locations to set up traffic islands on a priority basis. “Our primary focus is on Lanka Corner Junction improvement. Our plan is to establish footpaths at Lanka Corner Junction along with drains towards the railway station and towards the town hall. This will be a holistic junction improvement. The project will be executed with the contributions from the govt and private partnerships,” he said. He said while the traffic island would be designed and constructed by the corporation, installations such as statues and beautification would be carried out by the private firms. According to a senior corporation official, traffic study has been commenced at the shortlisted locations. “It will be followed by a series of trial runs at the junctions in coordination with the city traffic police. Based on the output, traffic islands will be established.” Among the locations identified for the junction improvement are Sanganoor-Kannapanagar Junction, Thaneerpandal S-Bend, Edayarpalayam, Athipalayam, Saradha Mill Road, Perur Road-Selvapuram Junction and Puttuvikki Road.
