Guwahati: The flyover connecting Cycle Factory to Lal Ganesh is nearing completion, with about 85% of construction work finished, the public works department (PWD) said.CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who recently inspected the site, said the flyover is expected to open to the public ahead of Bohag Bihu. The PWD has stepped up work to complete the project by March. The flyover is expected to ease daily congestion on AK Azad Road, particularly along the Arya Nagar–Lokhra stretch leading to the national highway, and improve connectivity in a key urban corridor.PWD officials said the foundation work is complete, while two pier caps and girders near the Barsapara area are yet to be installed. Deck work is also underway: 57 of the 68 slabs have been placed, with 11 remaining. The 3.25-km project, launched in 2024 at an estimated cost of Rs 376 crore, has faced execution hurdles, including utility relocation.A PWD official from the Central Guwahati division said, “One of the main challenges has been the relocation of underground water pipelines belonging to the Guwahati Jal Board which run along the main stretch, along with the shifting of electricity poles maintained by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited for the drainage works. The presence of these utilities created obstacles for workers and led to temporary delays during certain phases of the construction,” the PWD official said. The official said work now begins at 1 am, citing heavy daytime traffic and unauthorised street vendors as factors slowing progress. Despite the challenges, the official said the project remains within the stipulated timeline. The PWD is also considering extending an arm of the flyover to the Barasapara area, though the proposal is yet to be sanctioned.
