Indian Premier League franchise Chennai Super Kings has told the Madras High Court that it will stop using songs and music from films starring Rajinikanth, including Jailer, Jailer 2, and Coolie, in its promotional material unless it obtains a licence from copyright holder Sun Pictures, according to a report by The Times of India.
The submission was made by senior advocate P S Raman on behalf of CSK in response to a petition filed by Sun TV Network, which sought an injunction restraining the franchise from using the songs and music in its promotions.
Representing the media company, senior advocate J Ravindran argued that the team had been using music from the films without authorisation, infringing copyright held by Sun Pictures.
CSK told the court that it had been using portions of the songs in promotional content for the past three years and that the petitioner had not raised objections earlier.
However, since an objection has now been raised, the franchise said it would refrain from using the music unless it obtains permission from the copyright owner or a licence from Phonographic Performance Limited.
Recording the undertaking, Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy adjourned the matter to March 16 for CSK to file an affidavit.
The franchise, a five-time Indian Premier League champion, is preparing for the 2026 season. It will open its campaign against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on March 30 and play its first home match against Punjab Kings in Chennai on April 3.
