Kolkata: Postgraduate trainees (PGTs) at NRS Medical College and Hospital’s ENT dept have announced a cease-work in the emergency ward following an alleged security breach and physical assault in the early hours of Monday. The incident reportedly began around 2.30 am on March 23 after a three-year-old girl was admitted for coin ingestion. According to a formal complaint addressed to MSVP, doctors had scheduled surgery for 3 am, advising the father that the child must remain “nil per mouth” for six hours to ensure safety under general anesthesia. However, the father allegedly became “extremely arrogant” and demanded an immediate procedure. Despite explanations regarding medical complications, the parent reportedly threatened the staff. The situation escalated two hours later when the patient party allegedly returned with a group of six to seven women who verbally abused the medical staff. Also, around 15 male attendants were accused of physically assaulting the on-duty security guard and tearing his clothes. The agitating doctors claimed that cops failed to intervene and instead asked the guard to apologise. The ENT residents have refused to work in the emergency till strict action is taken.
