Lucknow: An 8-year-old boy was killed after being run over by a car allegedly driven by a woman teacher under the jurisdiction of Mohanlalganj police station on Friday evening. The incident triggered outrage among local residents, who surrounded the vehicle and detained three women teachers travelling in the car for nearly half an hour before police intervened.The accident took place in Imliyakhera village when the victim, identified as Arjun, son of Tinkal, was standing near the roadside where a community feast (bhandara) was being held. According to eyewitnesses, a car hit the child with such force that he was dragged for nearly 30 mt after the impact.Locals stopped the car and took the seriously injured child to the community health centre at Mohanlalganj, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.The accident sparked anger among villagers, who gathered at the spot and surrounded the car. The crowd detained the woman driving the vehicle, along with two other women teachers who were travelling with her, holding them at the scene for about 30 minutes.Police soon reached the spot and pacified the agitated crowd, assuring them that strict action would be taken against the driver. The officers then escorted the three women to the police station for questioning.Police identified the driver as Renu, daughter of Rammoorti, a resident of Gandhinagar in the Telibagh area. The car involved in the accident was attached.During preliminary questioning, police learned that the three women teach at a school in Raebareli and travel together daily from Lucknow to the school by car. They were returning from work on Friday evening when the accident occurred.According to witnesses, Arjun returned from school earlier in the day and went to the roadside feast to eat prasad. Family members said he had already visited the feast once earlier in the afternoon with other children. Later, around 4pm, he went again alone to collect prasad when the vehicle struck him while he was crossing the road.The victim’s relatives said the impact caused severe head injuries and broken ribs, and the child was bleeding profusely from the mouth.Arjun was the youngest among three siblings. His father, Tinkal, works as a daily wage labourer, while his elder brother, Karan, and sister, Pallavi, survive him. The child’s mother, Kamlesh, broke down inconsolably after learning about the incident.The boy’s body was taken to the CHC in Mohanlalganj, where a large number of relatives and villagers gathered. Family members demanded strict action against the driver.Inspector Brijesh Kumar Tripathi, in charge of Mohanlalganj police station, said the body was sent for post-mortem examination. He added that further legal action will be taken after receiving a formal complaint from the victim’s family. Police said an investigation into the circumstances of the accident is underway.
