T’puram: A couple travelling in car escaped without injuries after the vehicle caught fire near Jagathy bridge on Friday. The incident occurred during the peak traffic hours in the evening. Retired police officer Radhakrishnan Nair, a native of Kuttanikkad and his wife Jayalalitha were in the vehicle when they noticed smoke emerging from the left side of the bonnet while crossing the bridge. They immediately pulled over and got out. Moments later, the car burst into flames.
Attempts by locals to douse the fire using water were unsuccessful. Soon, fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control.Preliminary findings indicate that a short circuit could have triggered the fire. An inspection of the vehicle will be carried out to ascertain the cause. TNN
