Chennai: Six men from Rajasthan were arrested near Urapakkam on Sunday for attempting an armed robbery at a jewellery shop in Madharpakkam near Gummidipoondi on April 9 (reported in TOI on Apr 11) . Police said the accused, four of whom wore burqas, used a firearm during the failed robbery attempt.According to police, the gang arrived in a car at the shop run by Ramesh. One of them entered the shop posing as a customer and threatened the owner and employees with a gun, demanding gold jewellery and cash.When Ramesh resisted and raised an alarm, the accused attacked him with an iron rod and pushed him out of the store’s glass door, causing him to fall onto the road. As people gathered following his cries for help, the gang fled the scene in the vehicle.Based on a complaint, Pathirivedu police registered a case and formed five special teams to trace the suspects. Acting on leads, police tracked the suspects and arrested six men near Urapakkam. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the group planned the robbery by disguising themselves and targeting jewellery shops. The arrested suspects were detained for questioning. Tiruvallur Superintendent of Police Vivekananda Shukla and teams are probing them further. The cops have not disclosed the details of the suspects as the police teams are yet to apprehend a few more suspects involved in the robbery bid. The accused were brought to Pathirivedu police station for interrogation. Police are investigating their involvement in other similar offences and are attempting to identify their associates and network.
