CUDDALORE: A one-and-a-half-year-old boy died after he fell into a stormwater drain in front of his house in a village near Srimushnam in Cuddalore district on Monday and was washed away. The deceased toddler has been identified as P Sai Rakshan, son of Palanivel, 40, a fisherman of Keezhpathi village in Srimushnam taluk in the district.Police said Palanivel had gone on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala. His wife, P Deepa, 34, and two children, Sai Lokesh, aged three and a half years, and Sai Rakshan, were at home. The siblings were watching the overflowing stormwater drain in front of their house when Sai Rakshan accidentally slipped and fell into the drain. He was washed away. His brother alerted his mother that Sai Rakshan slipped into the drain.Deepa’s neighbours called the fire and rescue services personnel for help. A team which reached the spot dished out the baby from the drain 50metre from his house. A fireman vainly attempted to revive the toddler by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The boy was rushed to a nearby primary health centre, where a doctor on duty declared that the baby was ‘brought dead’. The Cholatharam police registered a case under Section 194 (police to inquire and report on suicide, etc.) of the BNSS and began investigations.
