Varanasi: A three-member delegation from Mozambique railways, accompanied by officials from RITES, visited BLW on Monday to assess the manufacturing status of the 3300 HP Cape Gauge CFM Mozambique locomotive.The delegation was welcomed by principal chief electrical engineer SK Srivastava. The delegation visited various shops at the BLW workshop, including the new block shop, light machine dhop, sub assembly shop, engine test shop and loco assembly shop. During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the various stages of the Mozambique locomotive manufacturing process and was shown the state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities available at BLW. Following the factory tour, the delegation visited BLW’s design department and held discussions specifically regarding the design of the locomotives to further enhance the Mozambique locomotives currently under construction.At a meeting held in the GM conference hall, Sunil Kumar, chief mechanical engineer (production & marketing) and Praveen Kumar, chief design engineer (diesel), provided detailed information through powerpoint presentations on BLW’s achievements, technological developments, loco production, global exports, as well as various technical aspects and manufacturing processes of the Mozambique locomotives. Mozambique Railways (CFM) awarded BLW the contract to manufacture and supply 10 state-of-the-art 3300 horsepower AC-AC diesel-electric locomotives through RITES. Four of these 10 locomotives were completed and successfully delivered to Mozambique by Oct 2025. The remaining six locomotives will be produced and delivered to Mozambique shortly. These locomotives are capable of running at a maximum speed of 100 km/h on Cape Gauge (1067 mm). Equipped with technological innovations and driver-friendly amenities, the engines are not only technologically advanced but also feature driver-friendly refrigerators, hot plates, mobile holders, aesthetic cab designs, and toilets. These features not only ensure driver comfort but also demonstrate workplace quality in line with international standards.
