Kanpur: A new unit called Black Hawk was established by the Commissionerate Police in Kanpur to solve incidents of riots, assaults and vandalism. This unit operates on the pattern of the Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) and responds to any law and order issues by intervening and taking actions like baton charges against rioters. Initially, 50 police officers were selected for the unit who are getting training at the Police Lines. They were equipped with new protective gear and wear black body armour. The Commissionerate Police launched a Riot Control Scheme to manage riots and disturbances, which involved training officers to handle rioters. This scheme was particularly enforced during festivals or VIP visits. Vibhin Tada, additional police commissioner (Law and order), said that disturbances occurred over minor issues and delays at the local police level could lead to major incidents. To prevent this and ensure timely action, the new unit was formed to control incidents of riots and vandalism. The unit functions like the PAC and is responsible for taking swift action against agitators and rioters. The officers wear black body armour to differentiate them from regular police and enhance effectiveness during operations. The squad is designed to prevent property damage and manage public disturbances with a strict approach towards rioters.
