Silchar: BJP will win between 9 and 11 of the 13 assembly constituencies in the Barak Valley, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday, exuding confidence that the party will secure a dominant victory in the region.Speaking to reporters after a campaign event in Katigorah, Sarma said BJP is poised for a strong performance across the region.
Launching an aggressive campaign across five key constituencies — Hailakandi, Dholai, Katigorah, Borkhola and Silchar — Sarma highlighted BJP govt’s development agenda and outlined a series of proposed projects to be executed for the Barak Valley if the party returns to power.Among major announcements were a high-speed corridor from Panchgram to Barapani, two new medical colleges, Doloo airport, and a flyover in Silchar. He said completing the Panchgram–Barapani expressway within three years would be a top priority. The chief minister also unveiled constituency-specific initiatives, including a university, engineering college, cancer hospital and medical college in Hailakandi, double-laning of the Silchar–Hailakandi road via Assam University, and a new industry at the Cachar paper mill in Panchgram. In Katigorah, he promised a women’s college, a 100-bedded hospital and co-district status by Aug 15, while Kalain would be upgraded to a municipal board. A stadium was also announced for Borkhola and a special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), exclusively for the Barak Valley.Sarma spoke about employment generation programmes and welfare schemes aimed at benefiting the region’s youth and economically weaker sections.Targeting the opposition, Sarma said Assam’s development momentum would stall if Congress came to power. Reacting to remarks by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that Himanta could face jail if the party wins, Sarma hit back sharply, asserting that Congress would not come to power in Assam.Later in the evening, the chief minister led a high-energy roadshow in Silchar, drawing enthusiastic crowds as he campaigned for BJP candidates ahead of the polls.
