Thiruvananthapuram: BJP councillors staged a dharna in front of the city corporation office on Friday, accusing the ruling civic body of administrative failure and negligence.The protest was inaugurated by BJP district president Karamana Jayan, who criticised the functioning of the civic body.He expressed concern over the rising stray dog attacks in the city, especially at a time when schools are about to reopen. “The increase in stray dog attacks and the failure of street lighting are creating fear among parents and students alike,” Jayan said. Criticising the city’s civic administration, Jayan alleged rampant corruption and inefficiency within the corporation’s governing committee. “The corporation is now controlled by a remote-controlled mayor who is yet to rise above childish leadership,” he remarked.He also emphasised that public safety was being severely compromised due to the corporation’s inaction, pointing out that several complaints from residents went unaddressed. The dharna was attended by several BJP leaders, including the party’s corporation parliamentary party leader M R Gopan, senior councillors Ashok Kumar, Karamana Ajith, V G Giri Kumar and former councillors Maheswaran Nair and Thampanoor Satheesh.Speakers at the protest demanded immediate action to control the stray dog population and ensure proper street lighting across the city.The BJP councillors also called for greater transparency and accountability from the ruling council and warned of intensified protests if urgent steps were not taken.
