Coimbatore: Unhappy with AIADMK’s decision to contest in the Kinathukadavu assembly constituency, BJP supporters and cadres blocked the Eachanari-Chettipalayam Road in the city on Thursday evening, demanding that the segment be allotted to the saffron party. The AIADMK has allotted Coimbatore North constituency to BJP in Coimbatore district. Party cadres said former district president Vasantharajan had been carrying out extensive grassroots work in the constituency for the past three years, expecting that BJP would get the segment in the assembly election. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, protesters said, the BJP secured nearly seven lakh votes across the region, while the AIADMK secured approximately three lakh votes. “It is unacceptable that the AIADMK, which polled less significantly fewer votes, has been given nine seats in Coimbatore while the BJP is restricted to just one,” a protester said. They alleged that the party high command had surrendered the seat without consulting with them. Vasantharajan eventually pacified the cadres to end the agitation. Vasantharajan said, “Our primary goal remains the removal of the DMK government. While there is temporary resentment over the seat-sharing, we will focus on securing more representation in the upcoming local body elections.”
