In the emerging government structure, Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar’s son, is likely to feature in a prominent role, signalling continuity of Nitish’s carefully cultivated social base even as executive authority shifts.
At the heart of the succession calculus lies the preservation of the “Luv-Kush” bloc – the Kurmi-Koeri (Kushwaha) combine that has anchored Nitish’s politics for nearly two decades. Any disruption of this axis risks unsettling Bihar’s delicate caste equilibrium.
A Kurmi or Koeri face in the leadership structure – either as chief minister or deputy chief minister – is therefore seen as crucial.
Political signals from Bihar also suggest that Samrat Choudhary could play a pivotal role in the transition. As a prominent OBC face of the BJP, his positioning – whether as a power centre within the cabinet or as part of a broader balancing formula – will be closely watched.
Within BJP ranks, there is also a strong view that the chief minister this time could come from the party’s own fold, preferably an OBC leader with deep organisational roots – a consideration that widens the options beyond Choudhary.
The decision will also be shaped by a wider ideological context. Bihar’s politics has long been dominated by Mandal-era backward caste assertion, while the BJP has often been associated with the “Kamandal” narrative. With elections due in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, the leadership choice in Patna will also be weighed for its regional political messaging. In the backdrop of the recent UGC-related controversy, caste sensitivities have sharpened further, making social calibration even more crucial. At the same time, Patna’s political corridors are abuzz with speculation that Dalit representation is under serious consideration in the new arrangement.
Multiple permutations – including the possibility of more than one deputy chief minister – are being discussed. Equally significant will be the distribution of key portfolios. With the Home ministry and the Assembly Speaker’s post currently with the BJP, how these levers are retained or recalibrated will reveal the contours of Bihar’s next political order.
