NEW DELHI: Mithilangan, Delhi left an indelible mark at the prestigious International Theater Festival, Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM) 2026, organized by the National School of Drama (NSD). On February 16, the Maithili play ‘Son Machhariya’ was staged at the Meghdoot Auditorium in Mandi House to a packed house. Written by veteran journalist Mr. Vikas Kumar Jha and directed by Mr. Sanjay Chaudhary, the play’s poignant narrative and powerhouse performances moved the audience to tears.
A Scathing Critique of Social Disparities
The play is set against the backdrop of the ‘Machhli Bazar Donair’ in Darbhanga. It masterfully portrays social exploitation and struggle through the life of Tetari, a girl born into the Mallah (fishermen) community.
The production balanced two contrasting worlds:
- The Oppression: The brutal atrocities of powerful landlords and the crushing poverty of the era.
- The Hope: The efforts of a public servant striving to uplift society from these deep-rooted evils.
The emotional climax, featuring Tetari’s love and her eventual reunion with her husband, proved to be a standout moment that resonated deeply with the spectators.
The Synergy of Direction and Performance
Under the skilled guidance of director Sanjay Chaudhary, the actors breathed life into their characters. - Shubham Karn delivered a powerhouse performance as Bisesar.
- Rachna Das, in the lead role of Tetari, impressed everyone with her depth and sensitivity.
The success of the production was bolstered by a dedicated ensemble including Sanjeev ‘Bittu’, Satyam Karn, Rajesh Karn, Mukesh Dutt, Rohit Shandilya, Dr. Surendra Jha, Neera Jha, Chhavi Das, Supriya Mishra, Mrityunjay Chaudhary, Anuj Kumar, Alok, Subodh Kumar Saha, Rajat Rana and Aarti Mishra.
Musical Brilliance
The auditory experience was a highlight of the evening. The music, composed by Sundaram Choudhary, set a profound atmosphere, complemented by the soulful vocals of Sneha Jha and Aarti Mishra.
While ‘Mithilangan’ has staged this play previously, this marked their debut at an international platform of BRM’s stature—a debut that was, by all accounts, a resounding success.
