Babhanipur: Battle Royal
Bhabanipur is set for a battle royale — Banerjee is fighting Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari. In 2021, Banerjee contested from Nandigram against Adhikari and lost by 1,956 votes.
This is the first time that Banerjee is starting a campaign from Bhabanipur. She generally campaigns in her constituency in the last leg, after campaigning in the entire state.
Banerjee was received by workers and women blowing conch shells as she entered the meeting venue.
All the ward councillors were present in the meeting. In connection with the SIR issue and supplementary list being released on Monday, Banerjee said that her party will lend all support to the ones whose names get deleted in the list. “We will provide legal support to those whose names will be removed or will face issue due to this exercise,” Banerjee told party workers inside the meeting, sources said.
The party leaders and ministers have already started a door-to-door campaign. Many wards in Bhabanipur have a cosmopolitan culture with certain wards dominated by non-Bengali populations and many are minority dominated.
Trinamool National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who entered the meeting with the Trinamool supremo, at a hall in Chetla, emphasized on the need to increase the polling, outreach and voter turnout.
After Bengal SIR, around 47,000 voters have been deleted in Bhabanipur.
Meanwhile, LoP Adhikari has already started his campaign, after offering puja at the Kalighat temple, which is a stone’s throw away from Mamata Banerjee’s residence on Harish Chatterjee Street.
Adhikari said, “We want to free the people of Bhabanipur from the bondage of Trinamool Congress.”
In North Bengal, Banerjee will start her campaign from Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri and Siliguri and then move downwards from Raiganj, Harirampur in North and South Dinajpur to Malda and then to Purulia, Bankura towards South Bengal in the last week of March.
